French sculptor (active in the 15th century)
St. Mauritius
wood, carved, coloured or gilded. Half-figure, relief-mounted, statue-like representation of St. Mauritius, who is portrayed as a Roman officer in a golden shoulder cloak over a close-fitting chain mail shirt and a skirt belted by a cingulum. In the lost left hand formerly carrying the Holy Lance. Semi-circular back plate with remains of old setting.
No hands. H. 65 cm.
According to legend, Mauritius was leader of the Theban Legion and was beheaded
as a martyr under Emperor Maximiamus in 240-310 AD. Since about 1250 he is mostly depicted as a Mauritanian knight.
