Yuri GAGARIN (1934 - 1968)
"Self-portrait in space", made during the shooting of the first documentary films about Yuri Gagarin in summer 1961.
Silver-gelatin photo print. Number 627, date 3.8.61 and London Express News and Feature Services copyright stamp on the back side. 12.8 x 20.6 cm. Perfect condition.

During the flight of Yuri Gagarin in space there was no onboard imaging (the first cameras on board the carrier rocket were installed for the flight of Hermann Titov). Which entailed the need to shoot documentary films and board part of the material after the flight. This shot was taken in one of the workshops of the BC-1 (where Vostok and Voskhod spacecrafts were created). It is noteworthy that the inscription of the USSR on the helmet was made directly in the bus before boarding the ship. This photo is a great rarity.
We thank V.Taran (Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics, Moscow) for helping with the attribution of this frame.
