Ancient reception of the so-called Narcissus of Pompeii
Early 19th century, signed "Sommer Napoli", bronze with dark patina, nude representation of the god Dionysos with fitting attributes, like the goatskin (nebris) thrown over the shoulder and a head crowned with vine shoots, on the feet richly decorated laced sandals and under the right foot a croupezion (bellows), the posture can be explained with the panther, which is to be completed on the right side, which is the most important companion animal of Dionysos, the name "Narcissus of Pompeii" is derived from the mistaken belief that the young man with the lowered head would look at his reflection in the water, the original Flavian sculpture found in Pompeii, which was created according to the Hellenistic model, is in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, on an ornamentally decorated, grooved round plinth, good age-appropriate preservation, H total approx. Seven inches. Source: Le collezioni del Museo Nazionale Archeologico Napoli (1989) and Internet.
