*MAO ZEDONG (1893-1976). [Quotations from Chairman Mao]. S.l. (Beijing), [General Policy Department of the People's Liberation Army], n.d. 1964]; in-16 (13.8 x 10 cm), paperback with white cover and red vinyl shirt with title stamped on the first cover (shirt glued to cover and dirty inside; some stains and freckles).
FIRST EDITION OF THE LITTLE RED BOOK.
This first edition, printed in May 1964, was reserved for the troops of the People's Liberation Army. It is slightly larger (138 x 100 mm) than later reprints, and the text, divided into 30 chapters, is 250 pages (instead of 270), preceded by a false title printed in red, a title in red and green, a rotogravure portrait of Mao, a facsimile foreword by General Lin Biao, 2 pages of preface and 2 table pages (see Oliver Lei Han, Sources and Early Printing History of Chairman Mao's 'Quotations').
A complete copy of the rare facsimile copy of General Lin Biao's message of encouragement, in the first state, with the superfluous dot on one character (corrected in the following edition). The Party ordered that the facsimile be torn out of all copies in 1971, following the failed assassination attempt of General Lin Biao against Chairman Mao.
A complete copy of his red vinyl shirt.
Handwritten mention in Chinese on the title in blue ink giving the date 1964, and a red ink stamp of Gao Xing Zhong. Underlining on several pages.
5 period photographs of the former owner of the book are inserted in the slit of the folder (black and white, 6 x 4.6 cm).
