[MEDIEVAL ILLUMINATED MINIATURE] – [PENTECOST] – LARGE HISTORIATED CAPITAL LETTER “O” enclosing a scene of PENTECOST, depicting Saint Mary in the middle (with burnished gold flames of the sun above her) surrounded by the Twelve Apostles (of which 10 visible), all with burnished gold haloes & a small red flame on their heads. VELLUM LEAF illuminated with burnished gold and blue, green, pink, red & white paint. Ca. 150 x 164 mm. (leaf). Framed (behind glass). , ¶ Provenance: The property of the descendants of Anton Philips (1874-1951). Beautiful large-sized miniature probably excised from a medieval Antiphonary (probably made in northern Italy in the fifteenth century). – Slightly creased in outer parts (occasionally with loss of burnished gold), but nevertheless in good condition (not examined out of frame).
