Lot 1154.The Preaching Buddha -
The Buddha, wearing a monastic garb with his right shoulder and arm uncovered, is seated in the classic meditation posture on a perfectly round lotus base. The garment is delineated by life-like striations. Some of Buddha’s supernatural signs - three marks round the neck, elongated earlobes and snail-like curls - are very clearly delineated. The Buddha’s left hand is placed on his lap while the right makes the ‘vitarka’ or ‘vyakhyan’ mudra, which symbolizes his sermonizing of his dharma as he travelled all over the Indian subcontinent. This mudra differs from Dharma-chakra-parvartana mudra, which represents the preaching of his first sermon at Sarnath, near Varanasi.
