IDOLE FEMININE called VARNA in grey polished stone. A seated personification of fertility with generous and angular shapes. The head and arms are simply suggested. Indication in ink on the back: "M. Commont, 1933, Coll. E. Licent. Varna - Bulgaria". Emile Licent (1876-1952), Jesuit and French prehistorian, is known in particular for his work in China. Most probably culture of Hamangia, Neolithic period. Height. 13, 2 cm. (collage under the chest.) Provenance: collection of an honorary consul of France, Touraine.
