Lot 446

Large Apulian Skyphos by the painter from Copenhagen 4223
24.2 cm x 36.2 cm.
Greek/ Apulian, c. 340 BC.

Exceptionally large, red-figured skyphos on a slightly offset foot. The high quality painting is of equal value on both sides and by the same hand. Numerous features refer to the painter of Copenhagen in 4223. On one side you can see a naked Eros sitting on a rock with magnificent wings stretched away, a patera and a plant in his hand. The imaginative composition of flowers in the scene already refers to the painter of Copenhagen 4223, while on the other side there is also a seated, but this time female figure in a transparent dress (Aphrodite?). In her left she holds a thyrsos, on the right a magnificent fan. In front of her and hanging from the thyrsos a hair band. Under the handles large palmettes. Under the slightly thickened and set off edge a wave band to the right. Below another smaller wave band also to the right. Apart from a stable hairline crack intact.
