Lot 453

Limestone head of a Venus figure
Height: 29 cm.
Total height with modern plinth: 33.5 cm.

Limestone in a clay-coloured browning. The head with a graceful face in a slightly inclined position with hair tied up like a bow. Broken off at the neck.

Provenance:
Private collection, France 1980.
Private collection, Belgium, sold at Maison de Ventes Vanderkindere, October 2017, lot 452.

Note:
The head is related and possibly from a similar locality as the "Portrait of a Ptolemaean" from the Serapeum of Alexandria. In literature (Franke-Hirmer, 1964) further heads of this art genre are shown in illustrations, which confirms the Ptolemaic style of the present figure. (1240582) (11)
