Lot 139

§ SAINT-SIMON (Claude Henri de Rouvroy, Count of). Of the industrial system. Paris, Renouard, 1821.
In-8 of [4]-xx-311 pp. Brown half calf with corners, smooth spine decorated with romantic gilt irons, gilt title (contemporary binding).
First edition in book form of these 12 pieces and pamphlets, which had been printed separately after the author's trial, between June 1820 and January 1821. This work was completed the following year, in 1822, by a second volume in-8 of 220 pp., taking up the contents of 7 pamphlets also published separately, but of extremely confidential distribution.
Less well known than his Catechism, which embodies the most accomplished version of St. Simonian doctrine, Du Systeme Industrielle nevertheless marks an important moment in its author's thinking, especially in the part entitled "Considerations on the measures to be taken to complete the Revolution" which powerfully articulates the political, economic and social questions.
An enriched copy with an ex-dono autograph signed by the author (on paper pasted with the false title) "to Monsieur Perrier", who could be identified with one of the two Périer brothers: Augustin (1773-1833), merchant and industrialist, or Pierre-Casimir (1777-1832), future minister of Louis-Philippe - both targets par excellence of St. Simeon's propaganda because of their prolific family's long involvement in business and industrialization.
Rubbed caps and bits, worn corners, small scattered freckles, small hole barely reaching the text p. 235-236, qqs small gaps of (original) paper in the margins of 3 or 4 ff. Good copy.
