Lot 122

PROUST, Marcel (1871-1922). In Search of Lost Time. Paris: Éditions de la Nouvelle Revue Française, 1919-1927.

Nice copy with the arms of the Count of Ribes, with most of the volumes in original edition. During the dispersal of the library of the Counts of Ribes (Sotheby's Paris, December 12, 2019) this copy of La Recherche frappé aux armes was conspicuous by its absence. Only the first edition by Jean Santeuil (lot n° 282) was part of it. It is thus likely that the two copies were originally joined together - separated for some unknown reason, the Jean Santeuil was replaced by another copy of the original edition, with a similar binding but without the arms of the Counts of Ribes. It is also known that in 1970 Luchino Visconti had thought of the Countess Jacqueline de Ribes to embody the Duchess of Guermantes in his finally aborted adaptation of La Recherche.
