SENAULT Louis. New hours dedicated to Madame la Dauphine . Paris, Chez l'autheur rue de Bussy à la Croix blanche au fauxbourg St Germain, circa 1685; in-8 of ff. 260 p, framed text, old black morocco binding, gilt filet on the covers and spine with five ribs, inside lace and gilt edges.
BEAUTIFUL BOOK ENTIRELY ENGRAVED IN BURIN AND ORNAMENTED BY CALLIGRAPH LOUIS SENAULT.
All the pages are decorated with great invention and a lot of fantasy: ornate letters, garlands, initials, flowers, birds and very varied subjects. The success was such that the editions followed one another for years.
RARE EXAMPLE OF A FIRST PRINT, recognizable by the quality of the engravings, the arms of the Dauphine ( 1690) engraved on the title and the banner on page 210, where nudities considered inappropriate on a book of piety were in the reprints transformed into mascarons. Small epidermis repaired on the top cover of the binding, light spot in the margin of page 220 otherwise beautiful copy.
