This typically Venetian study is close to the works of Francesco Montemezzano. The artist, who was born in Verona and remained there until about 1570, was strongly influenced by Paolo Veronese (whose studio he joined around 1580) and Jacopo Tintoretto. Montemezzano is also known for his portraits. A very beautiful head study of a young woman, formerly in the collections of Giorgio Vasari and Mariette, preparatory to the portrait painted by the artist (see Disegni Veneti dell 'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, exhibition catalogue, Venice, Fondazione Cini, 1988, cat. no. 23, repr.) is kept at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
