BRION DE LA TOUR, Louis Atlas general, civil, ecclesiastical and military methodical and elementary for the study of geography and history. Paris Desnos 1792 4to: front.--34 pp.; 55 + 1 maps, of which the last 2 large and folded, all lavishly hand-coloured (the extra map between 51 and 52: "Map of the United States"). Contemp. calf, paper covers (very us.). 3rd ed. of this rare luxurious school atlas intended for young nobles who traditionally took up the profession of arms, and therefore studied at the military academy ("École Royale Militaire"). It forms a complement to many geographical school books, but in particular to that of Nicolle de la Croix. This copy includes an "Avertissement", a "Table des cartes", a "Table alphabétique des régions, États, provinces, et principaux lieux de la terre" with all places present in de la Croix's school book and 56 nicely engraved maps, i.e. cosmographical diagrams as well as maps of the world, the continents, the countries and regional maps. All maps are "illuminated à la Hollandaise" according to the table as well as the contemporary sales catalogues, and these are surrounded by an elaborate rococo border, printed from a separate plate.
