Charles Nègre (1820-1880)

Euclid and Pythagoras, Chartres Cathedral, Royal Portal, 1856 Very large steel heliograph, printed caption on the margin image: 60 x 45 cm, paper sheet: 71 x 54.7 cm. The right tympanum includes a representation of the Virgin on the throne, dominating scenes from her life. On the voussoirs are represented the seven liberal arts, with characters who illustrated it: Pythagoras for Music, Boethius for Arithmetic, Cicero for Rhetoric, Euclid for Geometry, Aristotle for Dialectics, Ptolemy for Astronomy, and finally Donatus for Grammar.
