James Anderson (1813-1877)

Castel San Angelo, Rome, 1856 Albumen print, 230x366 mm, on blank mount, different intriguing marks in the negative, including a mark resembling a small number “6”. This early albumen was printed before the artist numbered his negative or from a variant negative very similar to the “45” plate. James Anderson was born Isaac Atkinson in Blencarn, Cumberland, England and studied painting in Paris as William Nugent Dunbar. In 1838 he moved to Rome and began to produce sculpture as James Anderson.
