Watches and timepieces
Watches and other marvels can be found in Watch and Timepiece auctions. In the form of historic, rare or one-off pieces, Vintage watches from the 1950s to the 1970s are extremely popular, particularly outstanding wristwatches by leading French and Swiss watchmakers like Cartier, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Omega and Breitling.
Fob or pocket watches (so-called because they were carried in a waistcoat pocket) are still highly sought-after in online Watch and Timepiece auctions.
Making their appearance in the 1500s, timekeepers attached to a chain or ribbon were also worn by elegant women around their necks. The golden age – or golden number – of these neck watches was around 1800. But timepiece-making's finest hour was in 1657, when the Dutch physicist Christiaan Huygens designed a mechanism with a pendulum that considerably improved the accuracy of clocks.
After that, silversmiths began to turn out gilt bronze masterpieces in the form of free-standing, wall and mantel clocks – highly complex and refined, but all available in Drouot Digital auctions !
